KIA allows you to create your own blogging using either your own domain name, or a subdomain of kiamagic.com itself. If you wish to use your own domain name, you still choose a subdomain initially and set up the actual domain name later.
Creating your site
Select the ‘Sites’ tab on the far left of the screen. Then click the ‘Create a Site’ button. Select a subdomain for your site, and a site title, then press the ‘Create blog’ button. I intend to change the wording of that button to ‘Create site’ at some point. You should now have a nice new site. To visit your sites dashboard, first click on dashboard from the main kiamagic.com site, then press ‘My Sites’. You will see a list of sites on the KIA network you belong to, with links to their respective dashboards.
Themes and widgets
We provide a variety of themes, but if you’ve found a wordpress skin you wish to use that we currently don’t support, just ask us and we can get it added if compatible with our software versions and plugins. To check out the themes already supported select ‘Appearance’ from your sites dashboard. Under ‘Appearance’ is an option ‘Widgets’ that allows you to select tools to appear in the sidebars of your chosen theme. In some themes these widgets appear in the footer area.
Using your own domain name
Also on your sites dashboard is option called domain mapping so you can use your own domain name for your blog. In addition to using this page to add support for your domain, you need to configure a CNAME record with your domain registrar to point your domain to kiamagic.com. You retain complete control and ownership of your domain name.
Importing users, posts and comments from an existing blog
If you have an existing blog that you’d like to migrate to kia, this may also be possible. If you use self hosted wordpress software for your blog this is fairly simple, you simply need to export your posts from your dashboard as a WordPress extended RSS file. This file will also contain details for any user that has posted a blog on your site. If you need other users its possible to hack the export script to make it do this, but no easy selectable option was available last time I did this.
When importing this file, take care to match any users with their existing kiamagic.com accounts to avoid the creation of multiple accounts for the same user.
Both the import and export options can be found under ‘tools’ in each sites dashboard.
Other website software may have tools for exporting users, posts and comments in wordpress extended rss format. Tools for doing this exist for smf forum software, elgg and b2evolution.
